The Technical-Behavioral interview is like a hybrid between the typical âtell-me-about-a-timeâ interviews that are trying to gauge my attitude towards the potential role, how I would hypothetically handle tough situations etc. except it may also be conducted by someone with a technical background (usually an Engineering manager)
First re: the behavioral part â we have the good olâ S.T.A.R. method thatâs always helpful
Having the person on the other side be technical means theyâll likely ask similar âtough situationâ questions but also have the option to dig deeper into my technical literacy

how would I come across other engineers (e.g. ideally ego-less, competent, reliable, etc.)?

Why are you leaving your current role? What are you looking for in the next one?
Mailchimp taught me lots, but a couple of reasons
team churn & intuit acquisition: elephant in the room; weâve lost product/eng leads, the acquisition is kind of messy and more people are leaving
opportunity: Iâm looking for a challenge and passionate set of peers who donât want to just chug along with the roadmap, but rather feel like they actually want to help our users. Iâve built my skill foundation at MC but now its time to recognize the influence/impact I can have and make a meaningful difference
You mostly have BE experience, what makes you so sure you can be Full Stack?
still have actual experience building APM Map from scratch taught me a lot about FE development
developed designer/UX eye && built React components
end-to-end development natural in (Gatsby): graphQL, configuring webpack, build lifecycle & deployment via netlify
more excitement doing full stack things > complex business logic data endpoints or cloud infrastructure work
Also personal preference to really grasp the effects of my code changes is to validate for every area of the stack and is what my title may not show â cloud infrastructure triage, server-side code (consistent, rhythm) and frontend (translation, presentation)
Why the interest in Blockchain/Crypto/Web3?
answer here is probably different if the company is in the space vs. from the outside looking in
Story: My entry to the space was not an investment, but about the idea of having transparent programmatic money. I knew what it was like to not have a bunch of money, witnessed the effects of crippling debt in my family and understood the power of code (shit is magical when you think about it). My interest then spread like wildfire: open financial system (remittances on Stellar) â tokenization of all things valuable (Ethereum, Smart Contracts, NFTs, etc.) â composability of the web (node validators + various protocols + unique use case that was never possible before)
Result: tinker in my free time, joined KERNEL KB4, looking for ways to contribute
Situational Questions
Tell me about a time you worked effectively under pressure.
keep in mind hustle culture; I donât think Iâd apply or be interested in companies that buy too hard into that all-work-no-life stuff, but this does feel like a good question to gauge how effective I am when things do get hard (which letâs be honest, only really happens at startups)
Situation: I worked on an audit of our multi-user data models. Spare you the details but we often had linked accounts with different sets of IDs and another set of IDs that could âlog inâ to one of those accounts
Task: Audit the data models, which uncovered a security flaw that technically allowed for revoked âloginsâ to continue to have access to accounts they were no longer supposed to. All-hands on deck effort brought urgent tasks I was in charge of (querying for number of records in complex circumstances), code fixes (writing a script to backfill / correct these records), etc.
Action: wrote queries and code
Result: 1-2 day marathon of minimizing risks and correcting thousands of records to ensure no malicious users could log in / do something when they werenât supposed to.

really hammer in the fact that Iâve been designing systems since I was an Eng 2. I donât think many can say that and itâs been a skill thatâs helped me immensely with having a thorough understanding of what is being implemented & the importance of communicating scope
Situation: (MC&Co context) designed a partner referral system MVP - simple on paper, but lots of moving parts to generate a unique link for a partner, following the client which could be on any database shard, keeping our data updated in our cloud service, etc.
Task & Action: 2-part role (product engineer)
design the system: write an MVP technical spec outlining the broad touch points, discuss tradeoffs with other engineers on the team, outline tasks
lead other engineers: tight deadline (6-8 weeks and we had other stuff on our plates at the time) outlined the parallelizable work, lead 1BE and 1FE engineer (both senior) to make it happen, engineering voice in product meetings to advocate for cutting scope
Result: We did it, code complete almost a week ahead of schedule. It worked pretty well, caught bugs alongside QA instead of after launch, had time to set up solid monitoring/alerts and we were code complete to really get ahead of bugs found in QA, set up monitoring / alerting for errors and brought in something like $250K in referral bonuses for our partners
Imagine it is your first day here at the company. What do you want to work on? What features would you improve on?
Generally, probably something user-facing and on a team thatâs comfortable with talking to customers/clients directly. Iâve had experience being far from the source of pain points and I think it just makes building a good product harder
I think really understanding the community building aspect amongst writers would be cool. I.e. personal finance writers on substack have a subforum can collab, etc. (e.g. NFT embeds would unite crypto writers)
